Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pay my bill?
To pay by credit card, click here. We accept all major credit cards. To pay by check or money order mail to our accounting firm, Sewickley Family Office Group (437 Beaver Street, Sewickley, PA 15143) or you can drop it off at the Hana Ranch office (5760 Hana Highway).

Why is my bill so high?
If your bill is unusually high, we recommend checking for water leaks and contacting your plumber. If there is a water leak on the customer side of the meter, it is the customer’s responsibility to repair it and pay for all water used, even if water used was part of a water leak.

How do I check for water leaks?
Click here to see resources for checking for leaks

Why did I receive an estimated bill?
We try to read your meter each month but if we can’t access your meter we bill based on an estimate of water usage over the past three months. Once we get a reading, we will true up the bill if water usage was lower than estimated.

When do you read meters each month?
We read meters around the 27th of every month.

What can I do to lower my water bill?
We always encourage our customers to practice water conservation. Here are some simple ways to decrease water usage:

  1. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth

  2. Use low-flow toilets and washers

  3. Install a water saving shower head and take shorter showers

  4. Fix household leaks. A dripping faucet could use 5 gallons of water a day and a leaky toilet could waste 200 gallons of water per day

  5. Use less water in the garden or for landscaping and consider using water catchment. A garden hose can use up to 23 gallons of water a minute.

What if I don’t pay my bill on time?
If payment is not received or postmarked by the date the bill is due (15th of each month) then a finance charge of 1% will be added. If you receive a Final Notice, the full past due amount must be received and posted by the deadline date or water may be discontinued. In order to restore your water service the full amount due must be paid plus a reconnection fee of $60.00.

Who determines how much water rates are?
Water rates are set by the Hawaii Public Utility Commission.

Why are there rate increases?
Rate increases allow us to provide continued safe water and improved reliability of water use. They also allow us to make improvements to the system to use water more efficiently and provide better service.

What is Hana Water System doing to keep our rates down?
HWS is committed to keeping costs down by increasing efficiency of operations, maintaining our infrastructure, and finding ways to improve our water system.

What is backflow and cross-connections?
Backflow is a term for an unwanted flow of water in the reverse direction allowing pollutants or contaminants into the piping of a customer’s potable water system. All customers are required to have a backflow prevention device installed on their side of the meter. It is the responsibility of the customer to purchase and install a backflow prevention device. If you do not have a backflow prevention device installed, you must do so immediately.

Cross-connections are any actual or potential connection between the public water supply and a source of contamination or pollution. Learn more about both on our resources page.

Do I have high quality drinking water?
Hana Water Systems has very high quality drinking water. Every year we publish a consumer water quality report for each system listed at the top of this page.

I’m Moving. How do I transfer service to the new customer?
Please give us notice if there are plans to transfer ownership so we can get a final meter reading. If there is an outstanding balance at the time of a new service application for a property, all outstanding balances must be paid before the new service application is approved. The Company will refuse to furnish service to such applicant until the outstanding bills are paid. You can reach us through our Contact page.
